One of the features that I've been looking for many years in all the mobile phones that I bought over the years is the email capability which I can use to send and receive email on the go.
I've been an avid user of tmnetmy streamyx since many years ago, and my dependency on email has been growing every time since then.
In this article I am going to share with you how I was able to turn my regular mobile phone into a mobile email device more powerful than a Blackberry.
Blackberries themselves are 831 powerful email devices, but what I am going to show to you pack more power than any Blackberry I know out there.
I've successfully used this method to read my emails, reply to them, searching through my old email archivers, all while on public transportation, in the toilet, even in bed. And my emails are spam free because this method uses also the most up to date spam filter.
Here are the exact steps to convert your regular phone into a very powerful mobile email device:
- First, install a java email application for mobile phone which has the capability to access POP3 servers or IMAP servers. If you don't know what POP3 and IMAP are, don't worry.. you don't need to understand it. Just google for the term "java mobile email application" and choose the one that says it supports POP3 and IMAP (if only POP3 is available, it's okay for this stage)
Power tip: make sure to choose a java email application that stores your emails on its own server. This way you'll be able to do very precise searches over gigabytes of your email archive in only a few seconds.
- Second, set your home computer/laptop to leave email messages on the server after the they have been downloaded.
- Third, set your email client in your home computer/laptop to delete email messages from the mail server only after they have been in the server for 5 days.
Basically, those three steps are the only things you have to do to have mobile email access on your mobile phone with more power than a blackberry.
I get many questions from my friends about this method, and the most common question is: why do we have to use a java application instead of the phone's default email client? The answer is very simple. Most mobile phones have very limited capability of email functionalities, and they can only receive and send limited number of emails before you have to jaring tm delete old emails to make more "breathing space" for the small email application software.
Java applications which I mentioned in the first step above, store the emails you receive in a server (for free), so your phone streamyx combo promotion have to store a single email. This moves the burden of email storing and processing on to the java application's server, not on your mobile phone. And no matter what your mobile operator is, be it verizon, t-mobile, vodafone, cingular or any operator at all, you can use this method.
Second question I usually get asked is how is this method be possibly better than a Blackberry service? Well, here are the list of what you can do with this method:
- you can check and reply to emails from virtually anywhere
- you can have email archive that is gigantic in size (several gigabytes) using only a regular mobile phone.
- you can search through the gigantic database with very powerful search function in only several seconds, no matter how old the email message is.
- you can have the state of the art spam filter that is always updated automatically, right there in your mobile phone.
- you can have all those features mentioned above with very efficient mobile bandwidth usage. In many cases I have to forward emails with megabytes worth of attachment from my mobile phone. Using the method above, I use up only 12 kilobytes of my mobile data credit to forward the megabytes attachment to my coleagues.
- you can access all your email addresses from your mobile phone. I've been able to keep track of all my emails, including my office email, my gmail and yahoo emails and other email accounts only from my mobile phone using this method. Just from a glance at the screen of my mobile phone, I can know how many new emails I currently have for each of those email accounts. It's been a big timesaver for me, and I'm sure it will also be a big timesaver for you.
A final note, it doesn't really matter what type of your mobile phone you are using. I've successfully used this method on a Motorola V3 RAZR, a Sony Ericsson W950i and the latest one is on my Nokia E61i. This method runs smoothly in all those phones, and should run smoothly in your phone too.
